expertness

I was just thinking of all the things that having children has made me an "expert" in:
Hyperemesis Gravidarum
miscarriage
recovering from full dehydration
waterbirth
natural childbirth choices/options
doulas
perineal massage
breastfeeding (NIP, nursing clothing, mastitis, clogs, biting, tandem nursing, pumping, weaning)
finding the cheapest storebought (as opposed to using cloth/making my own) diapers and wipes
car seats (rf, ff, tethering, boosters, 5pt. harnesses, installation, LATCH)
homemade babyfood
introducing (as in the order of) solid foods
Disney Princesses
Thomas the Tank Engine (and friends)
toy organization
allergies (especially food allergies, allergy medications, anaphylaxis, EpiPens)
food dyes and reactions to food dyes
high fructose corn syrup
Hanna Andersson clothes
stroller options and amenities

Wow, I sure have learned a lot over the past 7 years!

ps -- you'll notice I did not say I was an expert on sleep/teaching someone to sleep. Nor did I include potty training in my list. I am decided not an expert in either of those things. In fact, I kinda suck at them.

Wow! That post just made me and probably a lot of other moms feel a lot better about our parenting skills.

As I went through your list, I was able to mentally check off each item that I have expertise in.

Excellent post.

We tend to think mothers "check their brains at the door" but in fact parenting has both a steep learning curve and a wide range of knowledge attached to it. To even be a mediocre parent is to learn a phenomenal amount of information.
